Optimism takes over Unichain and multiple other L2s—is single-point risk here?

Optimism is expanding its business to operate Ethereum-based Layer 2 networks for other brands. Uniswap Labs' Ethereum Layer 2 chain Unichain plans to hand over production sequencer, public node access, monitoring, and emergency response work to Optimism, adopting the OP Enterprise solution.

The planned testnet migration is scheduled for October 13, and the mainnet migration for October 29. This operational strategy was first proposed by Jing Wang in the Ink announcement: the project team is responsible for building the application and ecosystem, while Optimism handles underlying infrastructure operations. In addition, the partnership reached by Soneium in September and the division of responsibilities announced by Ink in June follow the same logic, with both chains built on OP Stack.

For users, the impact goes beyond who handles things when a failure occurs. A unified service provider can offer professional protocol capabilities and coordinated operations, but it also introduces single-point dependency risk. When the service provider experiences a failure, whether users can submit transactions and recover funds depends on the contract design deployed on each chain.

From technical support to full operational control

Unichain had already established a partnership with OP Enterprise. Documentation updated on Optimism's official website on July 31 showed that Uniswap Labs was still operating Unichain itself at that time, paired with the Mission Critical premium service package. Combined with this October announcement, this change means the partnership has upgraded from technical support, with Optimism formally taking over Unichain's production environment operational responsibilities.

Uniswap Labs stated that after the migration, the chain ID, contracts, asset balances, applications, and Uniswap v2, v3, and v4 deployments will all remain unchanged. Unichain will still be a Stage 1 scaling solution, retaining the permissionless fault proof mechanism and the original contract upgrade governance authority. Only the chain's operator is changing; the chain itself and upgrade permissions remain unchanged.

Soneium announced on September 30 that the Optimism Foundation and OP Labs will provide support for deployment, sequencer operations, node infrastructure, upgrades, monitoring, and incident response. Soneium retains its own development roadmap and engineering R&D work, including continued development of the chain itself and tokenized IP products. The announcement did not specify a switchover timeline.

The earlier Ink adopted the same model. In the announcement, Jing Wang explained that the Ink Foundation can focus on ecosystem building, while Optimism handles network operations and optimization. The original plan was to complete the migration in August, covering mainnet, testnet sequencer, RPC, block explorer, monitoring, and emergency response. Subsequent documentation stated that Ink infrastructure is operated by the Optimism Foundation through OP Labs.

Behind operational hosting, reliability commitments come at a cost

OP Enterprise is a blockchain infrastructure hosting and technical service product launched by Optimism. The documentation describes two models: in the self-hosted model, customers operate infrastructure themselves, control the sequencer and nodes, and Optimism only provides support and monitoring; in the fully hosted model, OP Labs runs the sequencer, batch transaction processor, state root proposer nodes, and chain infrastructure, and is responsible for security patch updates.

Each component has a different role. The sequencer is responsible for transaction ordering, the batch transaction processor submits transaction data to Ethereum, and the proposer nodes submit chain state proofs. By outsourcing these routine tasks, project teams can reduce internal coordination costs. Ordering, data posting, and state submission are handed to the service provider, but Ethereum settlement and proof verification contracts remain independent.

Soneium's protocol promises 99.9% monthly uptime and provides 24/7 emergency response. The Mission Critical premium service package claims up to 99.95% availability, an initial response within 15 minutes for major incidents, and incident progress updates every 30 minutes. Unichain's previous partnership already included this premium service package.

But these are only service commitments, not a guarantee that actual operational stability will necessarily improve. Fifteen minutes is only the initial response time limit; fault remediation may take longer.

The advantage of this model is that the chain operator, protocol troubleshooting, and patch deployment are connected through the same organization. But the cost is that multiple independent brand Layer 2 chains increasingly rely on the same institution for transaction ordering, operations, and failure handling.

Once a problem occurs in the service provider's overall process, multiple client chains may be affected simultaneously. The announcement only states unified operations, but does not disclose whether infrastructure such as cloud server regions and signing keys are shared, so there is a potential risk of correlated technical failures, though this has not yet actually occurred.

Forced transaction submission remains possible even if the sequencer goes down

Under hosted services, Ethereum itself provides a fallback. L2BEAT's current assessment shows that Unichain, Soneium, and Ink all support forced transaction submission through Ethereum, with a maximum delay of up to 12 hours.

OP Stack documentation describes how it works: users submit deposit transactions to the chain's portal contract on Ethereum. When the sequencing window ends, nodes can parse the block and include the transaction without relying on regular sequencer batches. Forced transaction submission can initiate withdrawals.

This preserves a path that bypasses the sequencer, so even if the sequencer goes offline or engages in censorship, transactions can still be posted onchain. However, for funds to ultimately arrive on Ethereum, withdrawal proposals and proof verification still need to be completed, and this step may still have permission restrictions.

L2BEAT rates Unichain and Ink as Stage 1. As long as the submitter has sufficient funds, any third party can submit a state root. As long as a valid state root and proof are submitted and withdrawal conditions are met, users can bypass the original proposer nodes to complete withdrawals.

Soneium has a different permission dependency. L2BEAT's assessment shows that its current design lacks an available onchain dispute mechanism, and only whitelisted proposers can publish state roots. Once the whitelisted proposer fails, user withdrawals will be frozen. The forced transaction inclusion feature can only write transactions into the chain and cannot make up for the missing withdrawal proposal permission.

L2BEAT's withdrawal assessments for all three chains retain a seven-day proof maturity period. Unichain and Ink also have additional settlement conditions: state root settlement requires at least 3.5 days, followed by another 3.5 days after settlement is complete. Proof submission can occur earlier than settlement, so the durations cannot simply be added together to derive a fixed withdrawal cycle. Although Soneium lacks an onchain dispute process, it also has withdrawal delays.

Optimism taking over operations does not mean contract upgrade permissions disappear

Production operational rights, contract upgrade rights, and asset custody belong to separate domains. Uniswap stated that its own governance structure remains unchanged. L2BEAT's assessment shows that contract upgrades on all three chains require joint approval by the Foundation and the Security Council, with no delay for routine upgrades and no guarantee of an exit window for users before emergency upgrades.

In other words, even if Ethereum can provide a fallback for transaction submission during a sequencer failure, it cannot guarantee that users can complete an exit before malicious contract changes occur. Although Stage 1 preserves an exit path that does not depend on the operator, project teams still hold strong contract upgrade authority.

The native interoperability promised by Unichain remains a future feature. Soneium's announcement explicitly stated that interoperability is not currently supported. Ink's June announcement said that one-day withdrawals would be possible once the proof system goes live, but the current L2BEAT assessment still retains a seven-day proof maturity period.

The next important milestones are the Unichain testnet migration (October 13) and mainnet migration (October 29). Once the migration is completed, Optimism's strategy will upgrade from simply selling protocol support to operating mature production-grade Layer 2 chains. Network reliability will be tested by actual service performance, while users' asset protection will still depend on each chain's underlying transaction inclusion, state proposal, and contract upgrade rules.
